Since 1993, Macfadden has assisted USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) in fulfilling its mandate to deliver humanitarian and disaster relief worldwide. Macfadden has continued to expand the scope of its support to the Agency, and now offers support services to the ten sister offices that comprise USAID's Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA).

To date, Macfadden has responded to over 700 disasters in more than 50 countries. In the past year alone, the Macfadden team provided disaster support in more than 17 countries around the globe. Operating in some of the most challenging environments imaginable, Macfadden obligated more than $675 million in grants, cooperative agreements, and interagency agreements on behalf of USAID in FY2009. Macfadden deployed 24 staff members to serve on response teams for a total of 87 weeks and trained more than 500 individuals through 13 course offerings.

Serbia Contingency Planning and Economic Security Program (SCOPES), USAID
Macfadden is continuing its history of helping agencies prepare for disasters through a recent initiative supporting Development Alternatives Inc.'s (DAI) work with the SCOPES program. Funded by long-standing Macfadden client, USAID, the primary purpose of the SCOPES program is to aid Serbian communities in planning and preparing for potential natural disasters, crises and emergencies.

Macfadden's primary tasks under this sub-contract involved providing essential training to enable the rapid and effective assessment of emergency situations during surge situations to ensure that maximum capacity is realized. Training modules were presented to DAI and USAID staff to equip SCOPES personnel and potential assessors with the necessary tools, knowledge and skill sets that are required to conduct damage and needs assessments in a timely manner, while following internationally recognized standards.

Stamping Out Pandemic and Avian Influenza (STOP AI), USAID
Macfadden continues to support emergency preparedness efforts as a part of USAID's Stamping Out Pandemic and Avian Influenza (STOP AI) team. STOP AI provides technical resources and support services in preparedness planning; surveillance and prevention; outbreak and response; and re-infection prevention and recovery within the animal health sector. Macfadden, and the project's prime contractor Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI), are helping ensure that HPAI does not evolve into a human health crisis.

As part of the STOP AI initiative, Macfadden provides logistics and operations support to teams deployed overseas. Macfadden provides assistance in developing in-country logistics plans for distribution of USAID Avian Influenza Commodities. Additionally, Macfadden is helping to guide the development and review of in-country Avian Influenza preparedness plans, including the development of logistics standard operating procedures (SOPs). To date, Macfadden has participated in missions to Ghana and Nigeria to assist USAID missions and enable host governments in these countries to strengthen their logistics capacities to cope with Avian Influenza outbreaks and develop SOPs for USAID AI commodities distribution.

Lebanon Stabilization Project, USAID
Macfadden is working on behalf of USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) as an integral part of the U.S. Government's effort to promote peace and stability in Lebanon as the country continues to face a number of urgent and significant rebuilding challenges. Macfadden recently established a field office in Beirut to implement and monitor a fast stabilization initiative. Providing field program support, Macfadden manages the agency transition programs in the region. Macfadden staff directly supports OTI by overseeing the in-country programs that provide assistance grants and agreements to local and international organizations. Macfadden is responsible for administrative, logistics, procurement and finance aspects of the program. Serving as program evaluation consultants, Macfadden also supports several short-term evaluation projects to monitor and assess programs including border security operations, and making recommendations to enhance the overall success of the initiative.

Darfur, Sudan: Administrative and Operational Field Support, USAID
Macfadden continues to provide support to Sudan to oversee and implement humanitarian and transition programming as Darfur faces a number of critical political, humanitarian, and social problems. Currently providing administrative and operational field support to the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), Macfadden established two field offices located in Khartoum and continues to maintain one of these offices. Macfadden supports USAID temporary duty staff; the purchase and/or maintenance of office and guest house equipment; the recruitment and hiring of staff; the maintenance of communications system and the implementation of administrative, personnel and procurement support.

Macfadden Awarded Subcontract by HumanTouch to Provide Information Technology Services and Solutions to the FDA

Macfadden announced today that it has been awarded a subcontract by HumanTouch, LLC to provide information technology (IT) services to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). HumanTouch is one of ten companies awarded this indefinite delivery and indefinite quantity (IDIQ) prime contract for the $2.5 billion Information and Computing Technologies for the 21st Century (ICT21) program.

Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP)

For more than ten years Macfadden has provided production imaging services for EPA OPP. Macfadden supported the digital conversion of approximately one million pages per year of scientific studies and other documents submitted for approval by pesticide manufacturers. This work was performed at Macfadden’s facility in Lanham, MD in accordance with a tight production schedule and in conformance to specific quality standards. The documents being converted were classified as “confidential business information” subject to protection under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, and as a consequence, all Macfadden staff handling those documents was required to be cleared annually. Completed image files were delivered to the EPA on CD-ROM along with an updated comprehensive document index. Upon EPA’s acceptance of the deliverables, the source materials were delivered to the Federal Records Center in Suitland, MD for long-term storage. Macfadden also provided staff at EPA OPP with on-demand document retrieval and printing from the EPA’s extensive microfiche library.
